Middle-Distance Group – Outdoor Track 2011
Jaimie Phelan lead the group with National leading youth performances in the 1500m(4:29.61) and 3000m(9:53) to earn a spot on the National Team for the 1500m at the iaaf-youth meet in France
Provincial Records also high-lighted the summer performances. Kailee Sawyer set a new record in the 800m (2:13.54) winning the AC-U16-Midget Girls gold medal in the process. The U16-Midget Boys team of Nicholash Bedi, Aaron Lebold, Riley Alvarez, Cameron Waind set a new record in the 4×800.
In addition to the performances listed above the middle distance group had a remarkable showing at the Athletics Canada National Championships for U18-Youths and U16-Midgets. Nick Bedi claimed 3-gold medals winning the 1200m,2000m in club record fashion and anchoring the Sprint-Medley-Relay(400-200-200-800)with the other legs run by Aaron Lebold, Riley Alvarez and Connor Finnigan. Jaimie Phelan won double silver medals in the 1500m and 3000m. Cameron Waind set a new provincial record in the 1200m leading the athletes born in 1997(1st year midgets). Aaron Lebold finished 6th in the 1500m s/c setting a club record in the process. Others qualifying for the National Meet from the group included Katie Seiling(300m), Chris Motz(1200m), James Milton(3000m), ScottButtinger(800m).
Club Records were numerous throughout the summer as well. In addition to those mentioned above Kailee Sawyer set a new mark in the 400m(58.),Cameron Waind broke the MB-800m(2:03.), Scott Buttinger set a new mark in the 800m(1:54.53). Nick set club marks in the 800m(1:59.31), 1200(3:12.33), 1500(4:06.05), 2000(5:45.37) as well leading all MB’s in Canada in all 4 events!
Other achievements worth mention include Austin Trapp and Connor Outhit qualifying in the 1500m for the Athletics Canada U20-Jr’s in Winnipeg. Sarah McCuaig ran the provincial AO-Sr’s in Ottawa achieving the silver medal in a fine 1500m time of 4:30.27. She was also 4th in the 800m
In the other AO Championship meets Jaimie Phelan ran to a silver in the JW-800m, Kailee won the 1200m and 800m double at AO-MG. Nick also ran to a double gold in the 1200m,2000m. Aaron was the silver medal winner in the 1500m s/c. The MB’s won handily in the 4x800m (Nick,Riley,Chris,Cam).
The energy in the training group becomes contagious as new personal bests were established in: 300m(2), 400m(4), 800m(19), 1200m(6), 1500m(17),1500m s/c(1), 2000m(1), 3000m(2), 5000m(1). The 1500m night at UWO in mid-June again proved to be a thrill watching 12-athletes set new personal bests including Jaimie’s IAAF 1500m qualifier and national leading time of 4:29.61.
