Indoor Season 2011
The Sprint Development group had a strong representation at the AO Bantam Midget Junior Championship in Toronto this past March. Three girls competed in the 150 meter sprint. Leading the trio was Claire Neavin with a time of 22.96 seconds, followed by Emilia Lilek and Rachel Engel with times of 23.02 and 23.17. Over on the boys side, there were two strong performances by Laurel Creek athletes in the 800 m race, Ben McKay (2:43:13) and Kyle Sawyer (2:49.33).
The beginning of April brought one final opportunity for MTA athletes to compete during the indoor season, at the Provincial Championships in Toronto. Four female athletes, and five males competed in a total of twenty individual events and one relay team. Personal highlights include Zahra Sepahi, with a time of 1:18:52 in the 400 metre race, and Emily McKay winning the senior girls high jump event with a leap of 1.43 m. Erik Larson competed in four events, while Wesley Tang, Ben McIntosh, Ben McKay and Kyle Sawyer put in three impressive performances for the purple and white.
Outdoor Season
The summer outdoor season featured two notable meets for Laurel Creek athletes competing in the MTA 9-14yrs age categories.
At the MTA Flying Angels Youth Classic in Scarborough, Kailee Sawyer took top spot in the senior girls 400m. race with a time of 58.50. Kailee also earned a third place finish for her efforts in the 200m. Kyle Sawyer, proved his tenacity with solid efforts in the 200m and 400m races.
The culmination of a great 2011 outdoor season occurred at the MTA Provincial Championships in Guelph, July 16 2011. In the girls events, Kailee Sawyer earned two gold medals, winning the 400m in 58.87 and the 800m with a top time of 2:18.43. There were three Laurel Creek athletes in the 200m race, leading the way was Zahra Sepahi, followed closely by Claire Neaven and Maegen Rose Schwartz. Neaven also competed in the 400m. and triple jump events, while Schwartz had a strong performance in the 200m hurdles. Emily McKay took fifth spot in the senior girls 200m hurdles in a time of 32.33 seconds.
In the boys events, Cam Waind was the top Laurel Creek finisher when he took home the gold medal for the 800m race with his performance of 2:07.32. Ben McKay placed within the top five in the high jump event, with a leap of 1.25 meters and also placed 7th in the 400m in 1:11.15 and 15th in the 800m. Ryan Dooley also competed in three events, the long jump, 100 m and 200 m dash, while team mate Kyle Sawyer finished a strong 800m race placing 16th.
